Competition for the Factory of Art was organized by Lavender Lake
The competition for the Factory of Art was organized by Lavender Lake SuckerpunchA few days ago presented the winning projects, with the first in a Chilean team. This international competition proposed an “art factory” in the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, New York, containing studies private and public art, gallery, shops and work spaces for artists in residence rotating among others.
A factory of art, a public open space, a beach, picnic area, a garden, a space for community and culture, a land open to the water, the city and the arts. The boundary condition (water, land) this place made us think about how these limits could act with each other to create something new. A product of a hybrid space flick: the flooding of the land, the analysis of a close-up view of the channel and projecting it on the ground as a geometry, translating it used to be water on the ground but this time as a building memory channel. The channel is now a new public space for the city that brings back people.
Given the strong relationship between a typology of public space factory and exemplified by the immediate context, the project seeks to explore the tension between them with the idea of creating a hybrid type potential. Turning the plane land on the site, the project allows a multitude of travel options besides itself, resulting in a situation that seeks to extend the boundary between public and private.
Normally this would be a bad place in Brooklyn, a train bridge on one side and the river the other. The juxtaposition of the urban industry in the east and a natural area in the west forgets green space, so we try to do a project that represented a similar story but using new materials. Trying to create a symbiosis between the park and buildings.
The terrain is a toxic body on which the degeneration of space is a direct result of industrial activities that took place criminals at the scene in the past. Cleaning the environment is necessary and there is a hygiene problem that needs to be resolved, considering the invaluable social potential of this, a simple sterilization of the land is not enough, we need oxygen to sustain life. The emergence of a social movement in the Gowanus sector can be the engine for this renewal as a movement requires a specific space, this may be the dark reuitilización in this sector and degenerate, making it a “toilet project.”
