Education Center Torshavn the public building by BIG

BIG Danish office, in collaboration with Fuglark, Lemming & Eriksson, Samal Johannesen, Martin E. Leo and KJ Elrad, now awarded first place in the competition for the new Education Center Torshavn, in Faroe Islands, And sent us the material in this project.

The Faroe Islands are an autonomous province of Denmark, and this is the largest educational project in its history and Gymnasium will host the Faroe Islands, Torshavn Technical School and the School of Business of the Faroe Islands, with facilities for 1,200 students and 300 teachers.

Leveraging a unique position on a hillside at 100m above sea level, with a privileged view, the program stack (gym on school, on school) and folded, creating a protected central space. Each strip program opens onto the landscape through these overhangs centrifugally leaving from the central ring, taking advantage of views over the sea, mountains and bay.

It is a strategy in principle quite simple, which generates non-fragmented spaces and gives unity to the project. But despite this, the volumes flown in different directions will give an individual character to each part of the program.
