Le Cube Orange – geometric shapes set by Jakob
Le Cube Orange, a perfect cube impressive penetrated by a big giant empty cone is one of the new buildings called to lead the resurgence of the old port area of Lyon. Besides providing a strong visual Cubed Orange, the big hole provides an impressive office building architecturally valuable resource: their distribution divided interior, flooded with natural light and ventilation as well as provide a great view of the new district and river. This new flagship project, developed by French architects Jakob + Macfarlane Architects , certainly boost the old river port district of the city of Lyon. An old industrial area of warehouses and docks at the confluence of the rivers Rhone and Saone, which will be renovated by VNF (Voies Naviguad de France) and the Caisse des Dépôts and Sem Lyon Confluence. For the revitalization of the area, in addition to reinvest in the industrial architectural heritage, has developed a vast commercial and cultural program. The large building, a quasi-cube of 29 by 33 meters, has an area of 6.300m2 and 5-storey structure is built with concrete pillars. The exterior, a metal skin with seemingly random openings and is painted in orange industry, covers a facade of windows arranged in a pixelated design. The group produces a visual effect of moving water, face the river bed. The design of the large crater in the giant cube was not casual: the architect Jakob + MacFarlane have studied how the volumes of full-empty play inside the building, and the relationship between the crater and the facade, roof and ground level. This geometric game has finally determined the actual distribution in each of the plants, the light inside, and the program of the building, including offices.
Thus, the large hole dug in Le Cube Orange allows, for example, that the post was to create a geometric disturbance between the arch of the lobby and the new double-height space created by the crater, as well as arcade. The large elliptical raid breaks the cubic form of the building on four levels. The meeting between the hole and indoor plants generate a huge atrium inside the cubic volume, surrounded by a series of balconies and corridors connected to the offices located in each of the levels. This new geometric disturbance gives the whole building a powerful sense of dynamism. All levels will benefit from this mode of natural light and views, and viewpoints that are accessible from each level. Each plant develops its own distribution of bright and elegant space for offices and generate various informal meeting areas. The top floor has a terrace at the rear where you can see the panoramic view of Lyon-Confluence. At street level, Le Cube Orange is connected to 4 floating platforms that attach to the banks of the river and its springs.
