Llotja Building in Lleida by Mecanoo Netherlands
The landmark building Llotja of Lleida, the latest project of the architects of Mecanoo Netherlands, stands as an emerging architectural body and establishes a visual dialogue with the historic city and the river Segre.
The Llotja, destined to become the new icon of the Catalan capital, it integrates seamlessly with its environment and host the Theatre de Lleida and the new Palacio de Congresos. The exterior, built in stone, the landscape seems to rise Lleida and even reproduce inside vibrant colors that represent the products of the earth.
The main feature is the overhang of the building, minimizing the occupation of space on the ground floor to enhance public use. In this open space is planned outdoor activities to be enjoyed from the steps of the adjacent building. Under the overhang is also home to the main entrance, the ticket offices, shops and the cafe overlooking the River.
The design of the project, carried out by the architectural firm in collaboration with Labb Mecanoo Architecture, integrating sustainable elements in their design. The very shape of the building to create a large area of shade and protect the public from the water during rainy days. In addition, photovoltaic panels have been installed and a thermal storage unit. The surface of the roof is landscaped and can be visited to enjoy the sights of the city.
The Llotja has about 37,500 square meters and has six floors, two of them underground, dedicated to parking with a capacity of 471 car parking spaces. The main auditorium can seat 1,000 people and complemented by two additional rooms with capacity for 400 and 200. The building also has a business center, a foyer and the club’s Llotja.
