Lucy the Elephant in Margate, NJ


Lucy is the biggest elephant in the world and the only one in America designated as a national historic landmark.

Built in 1881, the building was designed by James Lafferty, with architect William Fri.
With its six floors and a weight of 90 tons, and it still works, over the years has been office real estate company, summer home, a tavern, now a museum.
This building is a remarkable achievement in terms of materials used, as well as construction.
12,000 square lined with sheets of tin and today it is an example for 120 years lining with double curvature.
It is entered from a staircase located in the rear leg passes through the thigh to reach the main hall. Pomoshtenieto reminiscent of a boat in front of windows that are ‘eyes’.
After Lucy made and similar projects, but it has only survived thanks to the local population, which collects money for its restoration at the end of 1960.
