The Barents Secretariat Tower by RRA

The arctic town of Kirkenes is the hub of regional relations between Norway and Russia. This building reflects the diversity of exchange taking place between the two nations and symbolizes innovation and open possibilities. Wood and wood play an important role in the culture and traditions of both nations. So the concept was to create a symbol wooden building. The result will be the tallest building in wood in the world, a multi-functional innovative architectural structure is a pilot project on the use of wood in the buildings of tomorrow.

Ramstad Reiulf Architects (RRA) developed the project for the world’s tallest building built in wood. The cultural center is a monument conviertirá of 16-17 floors, all built in natural materials and innovative environmental solutions in all parts of the building. If this is done, will exceed the current tallest wooden structure of 144 meters which is located in Arkhangelsk, Russia.

The Barents Secretariat, Norway wants to realize the role of the High North with the construction of a symbolic building in the border town of Kirkenes in the Arctic.

The tower incorporates environmental ideas as it is built with recycled and natural materials using integrated systems that allow the structure to adapt to seasonal changes to achieve carbon neutral. Biodegradable household waste will be reused as industrial and biogas.

Inside the tower, energy-efficient office will serve the Barents Secretariat and the cultural center will include a library, theater and provide a “creative environment” for all users.

The tower will dominate their environment and also provide a unifying space to welcome artists, students and everyone in the area. The structure aims to “Serve as an example of sustainable construction for the surrounding region while acting as a center for cooperation between Russian, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian and Saami.”
