The Museum of XXI Century Art by Zaha Hadid Maxxi
It was not easy to build: changes in government red tape and of course, almost impossible to design Zaha Hadid, have made the project took 10 years to materialize. But the new Art Museum of XXI Century, the Maxxi, is here to remind us that history not only of Roma live.
The Ministry of Culture Italian, Maxxi is the first national museum dedicated to contemporary creation. Located in Rome’s Flaminio district next to the Auditorium in Rome designed by Renzo Piano, the new museum will be a new source of historical modernity in the Eternal City. Zaha Hadid Architects won the project in a public competition in 1999 and its construction, certainly innovative and experimental, began in 2003. With a budget of 150 million euros, the building has a total area of 27,000 m2 which is divided between two different museums, the Art Maxxi Maxxi 4,100 m2 and Architecture with almost 2,000 m2, in addition to other services such as an auditorium, a library, media library, a shop, cafeteria, temporary exhibition spaces, spaces for events and workshops, and also areas for study or recreation.
Once the building has been opened in a first opening, although the interior finishes of the project are yet to finish. The official opening of the museum and the public opening will take place in early 2010. The Maxxi will then be the largest museum of contemporary art world, not in vain Hadid said at the opening and with the Italian authorities: “I hope really that embraces all the contemporary art world is being generated. I’ll be watching. ”
The Museum of XXI Century Art promotes art and architecture through the collection, preservation, study and dissemination of current art movements. To date, his art collection contains more than 300 works by artists such as Boetti, Clemente, Kapoor, Kentridge, Merz, Penone, Pintaldi, Richter and Warhol, among others. The collection of architecture has the personal archives of Carlo Scarpa, Aldo Rossi, Pierluigi Nervi and others, as well as projects of contemporary architects such as Toyo Ito, Italo Rota Giancarlo De Carlo.
The concept of the architect Zaha Hadid to design the Maxxi has been primarily functional, although the building has been developed in an innovative and experimental. Master to create the impossible and surprise with unique shapes, Hadid has designed a complex space of fluid forms that are interconnected at different levels and in combination with the large amount of natural light, creating a very attractive space experience for visitors. Within this vast landscape of continuous flow moves the visitor while he does the architecture.
