Travel platform, Burnham Pavilion, UNStudio
The city of Chicago is currently celebrating the centennial anniversary of the New Plan for Chicago at the time that impelled Daniel Burnham.
To commemorate, among other things the city has commissioned the construction of two pavilions, one of them and the other UNStudio Zaha Hadid, recently published in Architecture Platform (click here). These are located in Millennium Park, a large park in Chicago where they have significant room for interesting works of architecture and art installations, all for the enjoyment of citizens.
I was lucky enough to visit and photograph the newly opened pavilion UNStudio unfortunately Zaha row failed to be completed by the time I was in Chicago.
The Chicago fire destroyed a century ago the city completely, resulting in a total urban disaster. Interestingly, Burnham saw this not only as a catastrophe, but as an opportunity to make Chicago a great city in the world, meaning that from a major planning and good architecture could achieve the objectives. After one hundred years if we can see that Chicago is a great city and not only that, but an excellent example of good architecture, influencing the skyline of most major cities worldwide.
